When you think of coffee the name Four Sigmatic may not come to mind, nor might you associate mushrooms with coffee. But you should, and here’s why.

Mushrooms, The Original Superfood

Mushrooms held the title of ‘superfood’ long before kale, chia seeds and goji berries were tres chic.

It has been reported that mushrooms are the sixth most valuable horticultural crop and the third most valuable fresh produce item in the vegetable section of our Aussie supermarkets (after potatoes and tomatoes).

According to Australian Mushrooms, the peak organisation in our country when it comes to mushies, 90 per cent of people over the age of 25 either like or love mushrooms with more than 85 per cent of Australian households purchasing fresh mushrooms regularly. So, it goes without saying that we love them.

But before you start to visualise your mushrooms in a stirfry, or on the side of a steak meal, or even in a salad or risotto, have you ever considered mushrooms in your coffee?

Why We Love Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee

Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee Mix is a truly unique mushroom elixir featuring Chaga mushrooms and the exquisitely beautiful Lion’s Mane mushrooms.

Chaga Mushrooms

Chaga mushrooms are a parasitic mushroom found on birch trees, among others, and they resemble lumpy, burnt charcoal.

Lion’s Mane Mushrooms

However, Lion’s Mane mushrooms make up in beauty what Chaga lacks. Picture a soft, flowing white mane of hair that literally resembles a lion’s mane and you have (you guessed it) Lion’s Mane mushrooms.

Chaga mushrooms are rich in a wide variety of vitamins, minerals and nutrients such as B-complex vitamins, vitamin D and potassium while Lion’s Mane mushrooms contain bioactive substances that have beneficial effects on the body, especially the brain, heart and gut.

Their extracts are often used in over-the-counter health supplements and this variety has culinary and medical uses in countries such as China, Japan, Korea and India.

Produced by Four Sigmatic, the company says their Mushroom Coffee Mix is your go-to morning beverage to support productivity, focus and creativity. Perfect to kickstart your morning or power through your workday at the office or at home. Four Sigmatic suggest drinking this brew whenever your brain needs an energizing get-it-together hug. Nice.

Our Review Of Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee

But what about the taste? We chose two of our Junomojo team members to review the blend – one is a true coffee aficionado and the other a staunch tea drinker…

The tea drinker says…

While Mushroom Coffee is packed full of the good stuff that these mushrooms offer, there’s surprisingly little mushroom flavour. Four Sigmatic label it a “fruity and medium” coffee. There’s a definite ‘earthy’ value to the brew that I enjoyed. It’s not bitter or overpowering like some coffees can be. It’s a likeable, drinkable, shareable blend that should appeal to the masses – especially if it appealed to me. And when you consider the additional health benefits you get out of a cup, I’ll most likely be adding Mushroom Coffee Mix to my collection of brews. On a side note, I thought the packaging was cool. The separate one-serve sachets make it easy. Looks like “The Finnish FunGuys” really know how to make coffee fun!

The coffee drinker says…

Having worked in a cafe for over a year, where my mornings were spent taste-testing espresso after espresso to ensure customers were getting the perfect cuppa, I’m no stranger to strong coffee. But I’m not going to lie – the thought of mushroom coffee had me a bit nervous. Thankfully, I was (very) pleasantly surprised by the sweet flavour and subtle strength of this coffee. I happily drank it without milk – I’m normally a latte girl – and found myself feeling refreshed, rather than jittery, after a cup of this stuff. It’s a pleasant tasting coffee, with very little bitterness, that I could easily add into my morning routine. Add to that the incredible health benefits, and I might have finally found the way to make the perfect, fuss-free cuppa.

Mushroom Coffee

If you enjoy the flavour, Four Sigmatic suggests you enhance your daily routine by mixing up a Mushroom Coffee to start your morning, sip a Mushroom Matcha in the afternoon and then unwind in the evening with a Mushroom Hot Cacao. Truly, mushroom heaven!
